Heat Pumps
A heat pump does the job of an air conditioner and a furnace. But unlike a furnace, it doesn't burn fuel to create heat. It uses a compressor to keep your home warm in the winter, cool in the summer, and comfortable all year round. A heat pump’s energy efficiency is rated in both Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) and Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF). SEER measures how efficiently the unit cools your home while HSPF measures the unit’s heating efficiency. The higher those ratings are, the more efficiently the unit performs, resulting in a lower utility bill. Any heat pump of 14-SEER or above qualifies for a $300 Federal Tax Credit under the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

Indoor Coils
The indoor coil is the less visible half of your outdoor air conditioner and heat pump. Yet its job, heat transfer, is a key factor in keeping your home comfortable no matter what the season. When you buy a new heat pump or air conditioner, should you use your old indoor coil? Definitely not. Here's why: An old, coil designed for a less efficient product will prevent your air conditioner outdoor unit from performing at the optimum efficiency. For heat pumps the indoor coil performs the job of the outside unit in the heating mode and it simple will not work unless the volumes are the same.
